Chamois Care

Chamois Leather Care
I know its easier said than done but the best way to care for your chamois leather is to keep it as clean as possible for as long as possible. It sounds obvious, but try to clean your car as thoroughly as possible as you can easily wipe over a piece of bodywork that is still dirty while you are dryng it, especially on darker coloured vehicles. I recommend you keep your old chamois to hand when cleaningyour car, then, when you come to dry it, if you spot a bit you've missed, you can use the old chamois to wipe it clean. This system works well for drying around the door shuts and other areasthat attract dirt which are easily missed when washing.Rinse your chamois in clean water as you dry your car to remove any lightsoiling. When you have finished, rinse the chamois, pull it back to shape and let it dry naturally. The skin will dry out stiff, but once it is placed in water again it will become suppleand ready to use.

Why Chamois?

Chamois leathers have been around since the first days of the car. Early chauffeurs discovered their chamois gloves soaked up water superbly. As cars have become more advanced over the last 100 years nothing has surpassed the superb drying qualities of chamois leather, although sheep hides are now used instead of deer. Chamois soaks up water like a sponge and the cod oil tanning process helps them perform as well as stopping the skin rotting when wet. The fish oil also helps to give your vehicles paintwork an unbeatable shine.

car care

Over many years in the car care business I have picked up one or two tips and ideas that could make life easier. If you think you know better or you wish to pass on any of your own car care tips please don't hesitate to contact Grove Mill and the best tip will be added to the site. My first tip is quite relevant for people living in the south of England and suffering with the hose pipe ban. I use a watering can to rinse the car. This way you use less water but also you can direct the flow exactly where its needed. Best results are achieved if the rose attachment is removed.

My second tip is to take your car for a quick spin around the block after you have dried it off. This will help remove the trapped water out of the nooks and crannies you can never get to. When you have dried your car you will not get the drip marks down your paintwork that can spoil the look of a lovely clean car the minute you drive down the road.
